Safflower Oil
Safflower Oil (SAO) is derived from the seeds of the safflower plant, botanically known as Carthamus tinctorius L. (Family: Asteraceae). The safflower plant is native to the Middle East and South Asia, where it was initially valued for its vibrant flowers as a natural dye and traditional medicinal herb. Ancient Persian and Indian civilizations incorporated it into healing practices. Following its introduction to China via the Silk Road, it was documented in the Compendium of Materia Medica as the "Golden Flower for Activating Blood" and widely used to regulate blood circulation and vital energy. Today, China dominates global safflower cultivation and processing, accounting for over 70% of worldwide production.
Safflower oil is notable for its high concentration of omega-6 Linoleic Acid (LA), a fatty acid composed of 18 carbon atoms and two double bonds, with levels reaching 70%-80%. LA, an essential fatty acid for humans, plays a critical role in cholesterol metabolism and cellular membrane integrity. While LA is commonly present in oils such as sunflower oil and soybean oil, safflower oil contains a significantly higher concentration (70%-80%) compared to these counterparts (approximately 65% in sunflower oil and 50% in soybean oil), making it a superior choice for dietary supplementation. Commercially available high-purity safflower oil products typically specify an LA content of 75%-85%, with cold-pressed varieties retaining higher levels of active components.
